User Groups – pt 2

Last night was another successful meeting of the Oregon Data Community, virtually of course! We were thrilled to have two of our leaders speak, Jessica Aguilar, and Paul Turley, both on that Power BI thing that seems to be pretty popular… Jessica is our newest member to the leadership group and she’s very excited about it. She’s had a busy month with starting work at Pragmatic Works with me and Paul, getting close to finishing her MBA (go Jess!), and now being added to the leadership team for Oregon Data Community!

I’m speaking on Polybase next month, so make sure you come and see my presentation! While there will definitely be some fun connection magic to different data sources, it’s going to be from an installation, performance, and admin point of view. Essentially a DBA point of view!

Jess may be a new member of the SQLFamily, but she’s a member just the same. Paul called me his friend during his session and I really appreciated it. Arnie Rowland and Vern Rabe, the rest of the principal leaders of the group are both fine upstanding gentlemen and I’ve learned a lot from them. I technically joined back in 2011 (used to have the shirt!), but it’s not until I really threw myself into the group that things started to change for me. I’ve come a long ways in a short time and I couldn’t be happier and more grateful!

My point here is just like most things in life, the more effort you put into something, the more you get out of it. I still stand by my earlier post on user groups; they want to hear your message! It’s more than pure professional networking though. In my short time as a member of the SQLFamily, I’ve met so many nice and interesting people who have truly added to my life and filled in that missing segment I needed. It’s a long list and I don’t want to leave anyone out, but just know you’re all appreciated very much! We’re going to eventually get back to in-person events, but for now, embrace the virtual events and put as much effort as you can into them! I’m guilty of being busy this month and not doing my usual solid job on the marketing for ODC, but I’ll do better next month, and not just because I’m the one speaking!

Be excellent to each other (and respectful and nice too!)
