Maintaining a Balance

I’m not sure how some people manage to do it. It’s been a stressful year between balancing my job, my family obligations, my health, my Lodge, my Data User Group, and having a little bit of fun for myself. Luckily I work with some really good people who are more than capable of getting things done. That being said, there are also a lot of people who just don’t do anything unless pressed!

But…I did manage to come back to my joy of speaking and will be embarking soon on a trip where I will be lucky enough to speak at Data Saturday Gothenburg, SQL Konferenz, and will be helping out at Data Saturday Oslo and will end my trip at the most EPIC event, Data MoshPit in Berlin!

If you want to be successful in life, surround yourself with successful people. I can’t imagine a group of more motivated people than in the #SQLFamily. And….they’re really nice! Europe of course is fantastic, but it’s just going to be nice to see all these amazing people. Last year at PASS Summit, a number of us went out for a chinese dinner and I was taught how to eat ice cream Norwegian Style. These are the memories that keep you going during the not-so-great times in your life.

I will be lucky enough to see all of these people (except Kristyna since she’s getting MARRIED woot woot!) in the next few weeks. Hopefully they won’t run when they see me coming. I’m also looking forward to leaving the craziness of the PNW and enjoying the slower pace of life in Europe.

But….the thing about Balance is that you can always reestablish it. Even when things are going really bad (or when they are going really good), always try to get back to that balance to make sure that everything is being done to completion and the way that won’t keep you up at night! You’re supposed to delegate, but sometimes you just have to sweep the floor yourself!

Maintain that Balance and go back to Baby Steps. The movie “What About Bob” was my introduction to the concept and I have used that mantra many times in my life to get through challenging times. Try a few baby steps and keep that balance so you can go forth and do good.

I learned a new phrase in Farsi today – (Finglish really) – Jooyandeh yabandas – A Searcher is a Finder. It’s easy to sit around and feel sorry for yourself and it’s also really easy to be trapped by “analysis paralysis”. Search for the answer, go take those baby steps, get some small tasks done, and feel like you are closer to balance. As I look at the cat putting hair on the nicely vacuumed rug, at least I know that I did vacuum it today and I feel good that I accomplished that small task.
